The innovative Bananatex project by Qwstion

L’innovant projet Bananatex par Qwstion

The Qwstion team explored other ways to make bags from renewable resources. For three years, they conducted extensive research and testing to develop a sustainable material.

A collection for the future

In 2015, Qwstion discovered a plant called “abaca” grown in the Philippines. It belongs to the same family as the banana plant, except that one produces fruit while the other produces fibers. Robust and self-sufficient, abaca requires no pesticides, fertilizers, or additional water, and its most important properties are its strength and durability.

The material developed is the result of extensive research. From the outset, the goal was to create a durable textile that would not deform over time. The designers’ ambitions did not stop there: they also focused on the functionality and aesthetics of their bags to set them apart from other products currently available on the market. Qwstion bags therefore meet all your expectations in terms of ethics and quality, without compromising on style.

The Bananatex project led to the invention of a unique technical fabric made from natural banana fibers. Qwstion developed the concept with its long-standing partners, whose 10-year collaboration allowed them to understand each other easily and work hand in hand to create a new raw material from a raw product. It is important for the brand to work under good conditions and to know everyone who works on its products.

Understanding the life cycle of Bananatex bags

To better understand the manufacturing process, you can look at the diagram below, which clearly explains the different steps involved in making a Bananatex bag:

The final collection features two new models, the Roll Pack and the Hip Pouch, both designed to leave no waste at the end of their life cycle: they are 100% biodegradable, and their decomposition even fertilizes the abaca plants. The buckles and fasteners are also 100% recycled. The Bananatex project has therefore made it possible to create a natural material with real potential to reduce the brand’s environmental footprint.

A closer look at the designs

Roll Pack

The Roll Pack has a medium size and an adjustable capacity that can adapt to its contents thanks to a roll-top closure system. It is also waterproof thanks to a natural beeswax coating. It features numerous interior pockets for storing your personal belongings and a dedicated, felt-lined compartment for your laptop.

Hip Pouch

The second model, the Hip Pouch, is a small bag for storing your essentials, with two interior compartments. It can be worn over the shoulder or around the waist, and its vegetable-tanned leather details will surely win you over. For this model, Qwstion developed an elegant, waterproof fabric with a smooth, supple appearance.

Developing such a project was a real challenge for the brand and its partners, but the project is not being kept secret; on the contrary, it is open source to encourage other brands to use this new fiber.
